Well I think there's a big difference between a TV with great software and hardware built in and a sold separate set top box. Customers don't buy STBs. Not in any significant numbers. And yes a TV with that stuff built in is going to be more expensive, but I'm not sure it would be prohibitively expensive. Apple products are expensive for the most part, but people buy good products.

I think what Jobs was knocking on Google was the set top approach. Google TV has both that and a TV w/ their software built in in their plans. I don't think anyone has built software like Google TV into a TV so it remains to be seen whether it can be successful.

I agree Apple wants its products to be global and I don't have a clue what standards and TV service is like around the world. So I can't say much there.

Yeah It's completely speculation, and I'm not saying I'm convinced they're going to do it. But I can see it being a successful move. TVs and home theaters are in need of something new. And it sure as hell isn't 3D TVs.

Chris,

Good thoughts, and there's always the possibility Apple's blowing smoking in a misdirection campaign like they have before (though I explain why I don't think so in the comments section of my post).

"This go to market strategy talk is irrelevant when you aren’t talking about trying to get in with providers."

If they won't hook up with providers all they can do is offer Apple TV, which they already do. Making a TV with one built-in is gobs more expensive than an existing TV with one added, yet they'd do the exact same thing. People don't buy TVs often enough for Apple to make any inroads that way. Further, the TV they build would only be available to a relatively small market. Apple thinks globally now.

A TV with Apple TV built-in would be taking the Google TV tack, and we know what Jobs thinks of that when he says we can ask Google in a few months about whether people are willing to pay for that.

Anyway, we could debate this forever, we both agree it's all speculation about a product that may or may not exist (or ever exist).

Hi,yeah - I think checkin fraud is an issue but it can be dealt with (I've blogged about it here http://www.joelhughes.com/foursquare-and-checki...)Basically I think as venue's start to offer rewards they may well check checkins (that has a nice ring to it!) and, if people cannot validate themselves when the checkin then they cannot be part of the rewards program. I think the upcoming business dashboard for venues will help give them tools to deal with this. There will always be people who wish to game the system and the more complicated you make the defences the more complicated the attack will become.@joel_hughes
