I don’t really get why people think switching to a new social network will suddenly make other people civil. Gather people in large numbers on the internet and a decent of them will be assholes. Bouncing around from network to network won’t fix that. If a large number of folks are ever on Micro.blog the problem will be the same.
You can certainly take steps to make proud assholes from getting a big following, but the drive by assholes will always be there. If you’re well known or followed, social media is going to be a double edge sword of people who love you and people who hate you for no good reason. Just like 30 years ago celebrities probably wouldn’t be reading through any sort of “fan mail” they probably shouldn’t be reading through all the crap that comes there way on the internet.
This is probably why I’m most thankful to wallow in anonymity in my little corner of the internet. It keeps the assholes bugging me to a minimum.
(I also acknowledge that being a straight white dude on and off the internet keeps a lot of assholes from finding a bad reason to hate me)
