It’s that time of year again. Time to for my college football playoff because the current playoff is broken. Let college basketball’s NCAA tournament be your guide. Give small conferences and schools a real opportunity. Reward tough schedules.
Quick summary of the way my playoff works. All 10 conference champions get an automatic bid. There are 2 at-large spots. Preference for the at-large spots is strongly given who teams who play strong non-conference games. We want to reward the teams who play tough non conference games even if they don’t have a perfect season.
The top 4 conference champs get a bye in the first round. The rest of the field is seeded top to bottom. The first two rounds of games are on campus at the higher seeded team, with the exception that at-large teams can’t get home games unless somehow they end up playing each other.
Conference Champs
AAC - UCF
ACC - Clemson
Big XII - Oklahoma
Big Ten - Ohio State
C-USA - UAB
MAC - N. Illinois
Mountain West - Fresno State
Pac 12 - Washington
SEC - Alabama
Sun Belt - Appalachian State
Potential At Large
Georgia
Notre Dame
Michigan
These three at large teams were clearly the best options I think. I was really tempted to go with Georgia. I think they’re probably the best of the three. But their non-conference schedule was garbage. Notre Dame went undefeated, and in the end Michigan’s only two losses were to playoff teams, one of which was out of conference.
